Our Sustainability Approach

Powering the world's energy transition

Operating sustainably and respectfully is core to how we do business. Our plans take into account Madagascar’s biologically diverse and sensitive environment and the local communities that have limited opportunities for economic advancement.

The Ampasindava Project represents a new generation of very low impact, fully rehabilitated extractive projects that will leave a minimal environmental footprint during operations and zero residual impact, whilst producing significant quantities of vital ‘green’ minerals for the renewable energy sector.

The project mineralisation is hosted within a few metres of the surface and the nett volume removed for processing is small. The planned extractive methodology does not incorporate in-situ leaching and additionally the ores do not contain radioactive material.

Residual extracted material will be washed and returned to the extractive area, to be subsequently covered with previously stockpiled topsoil. Seed farms are maintained for re-vegetation purposes.

Environmental, social & governance

Plans take into account Madagascar’s biologically diverse and sensitive environment and the local communities that have limited opportunities for economic advancement.

The mining operation will be similar to earthworks, utilising simple, non-toxic heap leach extraction methods with the plan to rehabilitate as we mine. We plan to move 3-4m of topsoil and plants to the side for 3 months to access the 5-12m clay horizon beneath.

The clay will be processed on site in an environmentally contained heap leach operation, using sea water and modest salts solution to extract the valuable rare earths. The high value, low volume concentrate will be shipped from existing port infrastructure. Washed material will refill the cavities and the topsoil and plants returned for full rehabilitation.

Community engagement

Local First, Madagascar First.

The project will employ local community members, many of whom have worked in the mining industry for years. Procurement and contract servicing are planned to be locally based allowing enhanced economic benefit for domiciled communities.

Harena believes in the development mantra of Local first, National second and International third in prioritising the investment into Ampasindava and creating wealth for all stakeholders.
